ST just movedinto the neighbourhood and wanted a house warming arrangement that worked forher new pad. So we put together thiscomposition of white lilies, champagne and white eustomas, purple carnations,salix with little sprouting shoot (like!) all nestled in some multi-green hued leaves.

No matter how you look at it – be it as a commerciallydriven event or as the day star-crossed lovers exchange mushy declarations oflove – there is some magic in Valentine’s Day (segue: I’m thinking of Queen’s 'It's a Kind of Magic'). We met so many people ... girl/boyfriends, parents, grandparents,siblings and friends who popped in to pick-up something special for their lovedones… and vicariously the Nooklets (as we’re unofficially being referred tothese days) shared in this magic J

On an encouraging note, our signature, minimalist style of presentation continues to be well received and more and more customers are taking the cue and placing emphasis on the natural beauty of the flowers as opposed to the copious amounts of paper and plastic that it conventionally arrives in. Brenda, our principal florista is also standing firm in her quest to educate folks that Valentine's Day blooms should not be limited to roses but instead be a reflection of the receiver's taste. The thought the sender puts into this will naturally make for a better bouquet. But this is an ongoing project ...

As a bonus, Stephen Chong (www.rollofexposures.com) spent theday in the flower shop taking photos of us going about our work. Avid gardeners are welcome to swing by and pick-up discarded cuttings which can then be used as compost or mulch for gardens/flower beds. It's FREE. So this is coming a few days late, but they’re just too pretty not to share. Have a look at some of our Thanksgiving themed arrangements. We shipped these off to the Malaysian Airlines' counters at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport where they greeted travellers over Thanksgiving weekend.

The day before the wedding our lil' nook was practically spilling as we used every pail in store to hold these blossoms; carefully willing them to bloom just right and just in time for the big day.

Flowery Thursdays at Mang Tha Centre

Once a week, armed with armfuls of flowers we make our way from Bangsar South to a less popular part of Pudu for

an afternoon with the Myanmar Refugee women of Mang Tha project – the last few weeks they have been learning flower arranging skills from Brenda, our principal florista.

A few months ago, we got wind that they had been hoping for such training for a long time to use for special events in their communities and when we heard about it, we got in touch with Ariane De, the manager for the centre who promptly sent word to the ladies. Class 1 started with 15 women but every week the numbers are growing. Ariane said that these little moments of happiness matter a great deal to them as their living conditions as hard. As for us, we’re just happy that they are happy! Classes are lots of fun and every week their confidence level improves a tad bit more! Here are scenes from the classes:

Do you thrive artistically in order or chaos?

This quote came out of a posting called ‘How to steal like an artist (and 9 things nobody else told me)’ at www.austinkleon.com/blog. The backdrop that the quote’s placed on comes from a wedding we worked on last year (more photos from that wedding are in a previous post).

Anyone who’s got a modicum of artistic vibe and have travelled the oft-times confusing and contradictory path of trying to find their own brand of creativity will find value in this quote. Nook Flowers is almost 3 years old and the journey of creating the Nook brand with its distinctive look, feel and identity has been a challenge and a lovely work-in-progress. I for one have a clear preference for order and abhor the muddled waves of interrupted thought that comes from chaos. Although lately I have discovered a knack for calming down chaos quite quickly, so that order can return and work progresses as planned. When all else fails, I carve out 'time-out for thinking' sessions. Figured out what works for you yet?

BMW X3 launch

BMW Group Malaysia launched its brand new BMW X3 Sports Activity Vehicle on March 14 in an impressive all-white, custom built site complete with reception zone, hospitality zone, viewing decks and launch area. Sonia's flowers for Guys & Dolls

So we got a call from Sonia earlier this week – she was excited, her pal was opening a salon called Guys & Dolls in Kelana Jaya and Sonia wanted to send some blooms to commemorate the occasion. After a minimal description of her friend’s taste and the set-up of the salon, she said, “That’s it! I leave the rest up to you.” We love challenges like this! Our principal florista felt Sonia should (instead of a loud arrangement placed at the entryway on a stand …*yawn*) send an arrangement in a glass vase which could be placed on the counter top or reception table and be better appreciated rather than be left on the pavement outside and exposed to the elements.

Here’s what we put together for Sonia - mixed composition of multi-hued gerberas and asters. Judging by the lovely phone call we got from her and the enthusiastic message she left on Nook Flower’s facebook page, we’re guessing she’s happy with the results.

Happy Valentine's Day from Nook Flowers

It's been roses and more roses, spilling out of pails, all over the shop the last couple of days as we prepare for Valentine's Day. Other than the classic deep red, we also had among others various shades of pinks, yellow, purple and a gorgeous purple (Brenda, our principal florista couldn't stop raving about this hue).

Something's also got to be said about how good and fresh the shop's been smelling! People just walked in and stood in the middle of the shop and took a deep breath - it was a lung booster, Nook Flowers style.

Your floristas were super busy, arranging flowers, composing bouquets, manning the phones, writing cards and making huge satin bows and we hope all the recipients of those lovely bouquets will be enjoy their tokens of love from their loved ones.

True to Malaysian style, we have had some last minute sheepish requests from those who had either
a) totally forgotten it's Valentine's Day
b) believed a woman when she said, "no need to buy flowers on Valentine's Day lah" and are now regretting it

Unfortunately, by the time these lovers made their way to us we were totally out of flowers for but in the spirit of amour they've placed orders for super-extra-huge-special bouquets for delivery end of this week. One chap (bless his heart) has even decided to go the EXTRA mile and book for flowers to be sent on the 14th of EACH month for the rest of 2011. Now that's an idea (and a great way to get out of the doghouse!)
